Flying can be stressful, especially if you're not used to it. Between packing, getting to the airport and going through security, there's a lot to think about. Here are our 10 best tips to make your next flight from Montréal-Trudeau Airport (YUL) as smooth as possible.

1. Book Your Taxi in Advance

The number one stress factor on departure day is getting to the airport. By booking your taxi a few days ahead (or at the latest, the day before), you eliminate this worry entirely. You know the exact pickup time, the fare is locked in, and a professional driver is waiting for you. No more frantically searching for a last-minute taxi or refreshing your rideshare app hoping a driver accepts your ride.

2. Arrive at the Right Time

The golden rule: arrive 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic flight. This gives you enough time for check-in, security screening and a coffee break before boarding. During peak periods (school holidays, long weekends), add an extra 30 minutes.

3. Check In Online

Most airlines allow online check-in 24 to 48 hours before the flight. Take advantage of it! You can choose your seat from the comfort of your home and get your boarding pass on your phone. At the airport, all you'll need to do is drop off your luggage if necessary.

4. Prepare Your Documents Ahead of Time

  • Valid passport (check the expiration date!)
  • Visa or eTA if required for your destination
  • Boarding pass (printed or on your phone)
  • Travel insurance and medical documents if applicable
  • Hotel and return taxi booking confirmations

5. Optimize Your Carry-On

Keep everything you might need during the flight and in case of lost luggage in your carry-on: medications, phone charger, a change of clothes, valuables and important documents. Don't forget the liquids rule: containers of 100 ml maximum in a resealable transparent bag of one liter.

6. Dress Smart

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to remove for security screening. Avoid heavy metal belts, excessive jewelry and lace-up boots. Also remember to have a jacket or sweater in your carry-on, as airplane air conditioning can be cold.

7. Download Your Entertainment

Don't count on in-flight Wi-Fi. Download your movies, series, podcasts and music to your device ahead of time. Bring comfortable headphones and a charged power bank. Your flight will go by much faster!

8. Get to Know the YUL Terminal

YUL Airport has one main terminal divided into domestic and international sectors. Locate your boarding gate, available restaurants and lounge areas in advance. Check the terminal map on the Aéroports de Montréal website before you leave.

Tip

Our driver will drop you off right in front of the door for your airline. Feel free to ask them for directions inside the terminal when you arrive.

9. Manage Your Time at the Airport

Once past security, enjoy the duty-free shops, restaurants and rest areas. YUL offers great dining options and quiet zones. If you're a VIP lounge member, now's the time to take advantage. Stay alert to announcements and information screens so you don't miss your boarding call.

10. Plan Your Return

Don't forget to think about your return trip! Book your return taxi from YUL before you even leave. After a long flight, the last thing you want is to queue for a taxi or hunt for transportation. By booking ahead, your driver will be waiting at the exit and will contact you by phone for a quick pickup.

A great trip starts before you even reach the airport. Preparation is the key to peace of mind.
